Painting a Landscape on a Chair

Earlier this year I was selected to exhibit a painting in the Biennial Exhibition at the Monterey Museum of Art. I am honored to have my work presented by this prestigious organization. The organizers also set up related events available to the community, including a dinner (An event titled “At the Artist’s Table.”) For the dinner, they decided to include a raffle of a small number of chairs to be painted by a few artists in the Biennial Exhibit.

Chair Before Artist work

I was one of these artists, and I received an old oak library chair to work up.

I chose Point Lobos for the scene to paint on my chair because it has such natural beauty and attracts artists and visitors from around the world. I enjoy the shape of the cypress trees against the sky on the Cypress Trail, they appear to be dancing. On my visit in May, Whaler’s Cove was filled with mother and pup seals beached in the sunshine. You will find the arch at China Cove hidden amongst the rock ledges.

“Point Lobos Views” Steps for completion:

  • Sand shiny finish off chair, and wipe down
  • Apply 1 coat of stain blocking primer
  • Sand, remove dust and apply 2 coats of General Finishes Milk paint, Persian Blue. Sand between coats
  • A cypress Tree from the Cypress Trail was painted on the upright, front with rocks below.
  • Then the seals at Whaler’s Cove were painted on the seat front.
  • The colors of the ocean cove were painted on the seat, middle and back, and an arch painted there for the arch at China Cove.
  • A coat of General Finishes High Performance Top Coat was applied to the entire painting, and a second coat was applied to the entire chair.
  • Golden brand artist acrylic paints were used for the images on the chair.

The result of my efforts was raffled off to an attendee of the event, which included artists, collectors, art promoters and other enthusiasts.
