Early this spring, while at an outdoor garden store, I spotted an oriental poppy that matched the color of one I painted 20 years ago after a trip to Monet’s garden in Giverny, France. I bought this poppy plant, established it in my garden behind my art studio, and the plant grew large and took over one end of a garden bed. Finally, the large buds appeared and I waited in anticipation to see the blooms. Once they came, they did not disappoint.

The flowers were large and fushia colored with dark magenta centers, and with a mound of stamens laden with gold pollen. The bees loved the flowers. A cloud of the buzzing insects visited the large pink blooms every day. I painted the poppy in the garden and then worked on it further in my studio.” – mh

On a slope beside my Soquel studio, I found the forget-me-nots under the oaks and the wild calendula nearer in. I also had the lucky happenstance of finding daffodils popping up amidst the calendula. These inspired this 18×18 painting, “Hillside Wildflowers.” I used several spatter techniques to present the  random scattering of the flowers in nature’s carpet. My daughter video taped my progress. She included my ongoing explanations of the particular spatter techniques I used. She then produced a YouTube video from her taping. A fun family effort while on stay-at-home.” – mh

Using “Spatter” with Oil Paint
post

Spattering is a term which means spraying small droplets of paint onto the canvas. Spatter techniques in oil paintings can be applied to create a sense of mist, fog, ocean spray, or random wildflowers. I first became familiar with the use of spatter years ago with watercolor paint and nowadays … Read More

Walnut Frame on " High Tide" 9x12
Making Frames
post

When I harvested a black walnut tree in Massachusetts to have a memory of my childhood home, I had no idea of the adventure ahead. Now I have a stack of rough sawn boards here in Soquel. I decided to make some frames for my paintings, but little did I … Read More

Unframed size: 18″ x 24″; framed size 24″ x 30″

This painting is of a scene I encountered on a painting expedition to the south of France with a group of other painters. The village on the hill is Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, a village in the Luberon Valley. During late spring, the Flanders Field Poppies splash the meadows with their bright red color. I wish I were packing for another painting vacation in France. Looking at my paintings and photos can take me there in my memory and imagination.” – mh

“Elkhorn Slough National Wildlife Preserve provides 1700 acres of open space to hike, paint, and see wildlife. This is a favorite trail of mine as I always enjoy painting oak trees and the golden meadows that surround them in the summer. I painted this on location and was able to stand under a large old oak tree keeping cool as I worked.” – mh

Hillside Vineyard, 9x12

Unframed size: 9″ x 12″; framed size 15″ x 18″

“This painting represents a small study with the compositional design of radiating lines. The olive trees with their blue green leaves contained the vineyard. The farm house creates a distant focal point as the radiating vines lead you into the painting. I enjoyed the day with painting friends, as I worked on this piece in a vineyard in Correlitos, CA. Autumn color abounded on the pinot vines and their oranges complement the blue sky. Back in the studio, I used this painting as a guide to create a larger painting.” – mh

“This pastoral scene is located within a county park in inland California. After the first rains, the colors of the grasses change from gold to green. The red barn provides a nice complement to all the greens. I am always attracted to these peaceful scenes. I painted this as a class demo for my students in my Soquel studio.” – mh

Shades of Blue, 24x30
Shades of Blue
product

Unframed size: 24″ x 30″; framed size 30″ x 36″

This painting developed in my studio from a smaller plein air study made on the California coast, within a state park. On a sunny day, the waters here are remarkable shades of blues and greens. Particularly where there is sand beneath shallow waters, the teal, jade and ultramarine blues come out. As I was looking north at the headlands in Big Sur, I felt again how small my part is in the greater whole. I am humbled and thankful to be here.” – mh

“This painting was the largest and final in a series I made depicting this area. I find in this painting that the path down and the curving beach make a pleasant s-curve composition. The viewer is positioned overlooking the beach from the dunes near Pescadero. The bright flowers in the foreground contrast with the fog off in the distance, giving depth to the painting.” – mh

“I painted this plein air, on the coast near Pescadero. I am most at peace while in the open air and surrounded by the beauty of trees, the ocean, or the gardens we humans have created. The Iceplant turns shades of burgundy and orange, colors which are said to radiate warmth and energy.– mh

“Traveling south of Carmel on Highway One, there are many places to pull off the road and admire the view. The area depicted here represents one of my favorites. The view is so vast and the colors of the ocean, on a clear day, are enchanting shades of blues and greens. The location depicted here is one I return to again and again to meditate and to paint.” – mh
