My coastal paintings have been inspired and painted along that special “land-meets-sea” boundary where great scenes of powerful water and impressive cliffs abound. My coastals include scenes from Europe and America, but are predominantly of the California Coast near my home, with special emphasis on the Big Sur region.

    Anna’s View 12×16

    Unframed size: 12″ x 16″

In 2008, another artist lived in a home with a dock that bordered Corcoran Lagoon. She invited me to paint there and I practiced painting reflections on water. I truly enjoyed capturing the quiet mood of the lagoon in the morning soft light. I could see the Pacific Ocean in the distance with the fog hovering just off shore. Anna has quite a view!” – mh

“The California coast never fails to enliven and inspire me. The format I used here, twice as wide as tall, accentuates the wide expansive beach at this location, and is my representation of the area near Monastery Beach. I found many spring wildflowers in bloom, with the beach in the middle ground.” – mh

“This painting was created in the studio. I wanted to emphasize the variety of colors that appear on the coastal shelves in the early summer. Painting the view at this area of the Big Sur Coast requires a finesse of the values, as the layers of land drifting to the sea lose their color, going from greens in the foreground to blues in the far distance. In summer, once California’s coast has had sufficient warmth and sunlight, the wildflowers abound. This area is one of my favorite summer painting locations.” – mh

” Early morning winter’s light creates patterns on the cliff edges and distant mountains on the Big Sur coast. I used the vertical format to emphasize the steepness of the Big Sur mountains. Along the coast road to Big Sur, I found meadows intermingling with rocky outcroppings, bait to trap this oil painter! The cattle in this view have a pasture looking out at the Pacific Ocean. I’m sure their milk tastes great as they must be happy cows. Golds and blues are great complementary colors and this combination abounds on this scenic CA-1 route. See my painting “Viva la Vida” for the same location looking south.” – mh

Shark Fin Cove is a well known painter’s spot just south of Davenport between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. The unusual formation looks like a shark’s fin. In this painting, I put the “fin” in the foreground and focused on the ocean and the shadow cast by the opposing cliff. Wildflowers of oxalis were in full bloom during this winter paint out.” – mh

I’m always drawn to paint big views, and the hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean offer many spectacular scenes. In early summer, before the dry season takes hold, many greens can be found in the grasses, bushes and trees, which here surround a meadow with a trail passing through it. I enjoyed standing in the meadow, listening to the bird song and painting this plein air piece while the ocean breeze kept me cool..” – mh

On one of our visits, we hiked out to the beaches at Andrew Molera State Park. We took the high trail, a new one for us. Part way along stood an old log cabin amongst tall eucalyptus trees.” – mh [continued in Description below]

This large painting references the coastline North of Santa Cruz. I made several plein air paintings at this location before I decided to make a large painting of the scene. The effect of this size makes me feel I can walk into the scene, hear the waves, and feel the sand squish under my toes. The edges are painted, so it can be hung with or without a frame.” – mh

    Little Sur River 12×16

    Unframed size: 12″ x 16″

This plein air painting was created during a trip to Big Sur during an art contest. The view of the Little Sur River from this vantage point is unequalled! The river made a pleasing S curve as it made its way to the sea. I parked on the side of Highway 1. However, I felt quite vulnerable to the large semi trucks that travel the coast route. As they turn up the hill, for a few seconds, they were pointed right at me! Very unsettling, so I did not complete it at the time. Now it is done.” – mh

    Low Tide Whalers Cove 12×16

    Unframed size: 12″ x 16″

I began this painting during the Carmel Art Festival in 2009. It has been in my collection since. At Whaler’s Cove, I hiked up the stairs with my gear, and found a location where I could see the Carmelite Monastery in the distance. The shrubs have now grown taller, and it is more difficult to see the Monastery. The tide was out and I liked how the opposite rocky shore led the eye to the monastery.” – mh

“Point Sur was painted in my studio after a trip south along CA Highway One. This location is often very windy, so photos helped guide my painting. From this view you can not see the lighthouse which is perched on the 361-foot rock cliff out in the Pacific Ocean. I enjoyed how the fog gently touched the coastline and the beach curved up to the light station promontory. Point Sur Lighthouse, 40 feet tall, is a light station at Point Sur 19 miles south of Carmel, California. It was established in 1889 and is part of Point Sur State Historic Park. Tours are available on their website.” – mh

    Sea Lavender 24×36

    Unframed size: 24″ x 36″; framed size 32″ x 44″

The color of these lavender flowers along the Pacific Coast stopped me in my tracks on a plein air expedition with fellow artists. The sea lavender in the foreground sets off the Santa Cruz lighthouse at the small craft harbor. The small plein air painting I did that day led later to this larger studio work. I emphasized the lavender colored shadows from the cypress on the left side to unify the painting.” – mh

This was one of several painted while on an artist retreat in Big Sur. This painting presents a cove at Point Lobos State Nature Reserve. At any location, the plein air painter must narrow the scene to an image that she/he feels can be reproduced on 2 dimensions. Moving trees and omitting structures can sometimes create a more inviting image. This painting is my artist view of the estuaries around the Elkhorn Slough, where it meets the village of Moss Landing. I enjoyed the challenge of painting subtle reflections in the water. – mh

I’m always drawn to paint big views, and the hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean offer many spectacular scenes. This painting began as a demonstration for my spring studio class. In my studio, I added spring colors to the meadow. There is a sprinkling of wildflowers that often appear in California meadows in the springtime. At this time of year, there are also many bird songs that fill the air. While painting, I listened to all the nesting birds in the trees around my studio: thus the title.” – mh

“I painted this plein air, on the coast near Big Sur. I am most at peace while in the open air and surrounded by the beauty of trees, the ocean, or the gardens we humans have created. The majesty of the Big Sur falling down into the Pacific Ocean provokes a sense of wonder. As I paint here, I often encounter people from around the world who have traveled far to see these inspiring views.– mh

    Sundown 24 x 36

    Unframed size: 24″ x 36″; framed size 32″ x 44″

This painting was created after many visits to the coast during that special hour when the sun is setting. I made notes and a few small paintings to help my memory preserve the change of value as the light fades. I was particularly interested in noting how the colors of the sky are reflected in the ocean and surrounding elements. I noted how the land loses definition in the distance when our eyes can still make out detail in the close by rocks and water.” – mh

“This painting was created in the studio. I found this tree on the Cypress Trail in Point Lobos Park, standing against the coastal winds with roots exposed, but clinging to the steep hillside. Those often strong coastal winds are made visible by the shapes of branches of these trees. The cypress remind me of graceful dancers. After completion, I named this painting Tenacious Cypress for its reflection of the human qualities of hanging on against all odds and persevering against adversity.”” – mh

The area containing the slough, the Elkhorn National Wildlife Preserve, is a little visited but great place for walking, bird watching, appreciating the trees and just enjoying being out in nature. I’ve hiked around and kayaked in the slough. I sometimes take my paints and easel, and on this occasion I found this scene, set off with good morning lighting. I made this painting then and there. – mh
