Arana Gulch is a popular walking area for many locals. The park sits just above the Santa Cruz yacht harbor. Occasionally cattle are used to graze out invasive species. The park is framed by tall Eucalyptus trees in the distance. The gold grasses of late summer are a warm complement to the cool greens of the trees.” – mh

Unframed size 11×14, framed size 17×20

“I often plan to visit New England in October, when the leaves are in full glory. My sister lives on the outskirts of a busy college town. I’m able to find many pastoral painting opportunities in her neighborhood. This view is I’m looking north with Mt Holyoke behind me. The tractor trail leads you into the painting, where the horses and barns sit  bordered by vegetation gaining its fall colors.” – mh

  • Hillside Vineyard, 9x12

    Hillside Vineyard 9×12

    Unframed size: 9″ x 12″; framed size 15″ x 18″

“This painting represents a small study with the compositional design of radiating lines. The olive trees with their blue green leaves contained the vineyard. The farm house creates a distant focal point as the radiating vines lead you into the painting. I enjoyed the day with painting friends, as I worked on this piece in a vineyard in Correlitos, CA. Autumn color abounded on the pinot vines and their oranges complement the blue sky. Back in the studio, I used this painting as a guide to create a larger painting.” – mh

  • Horses in Autumn, 22x28, oil

    Horses in Autumn 22×28

    Unframed size: 22″ x 28″; framed size 23″ x 29″

“On the back roads of New England one can find calming pastoral scenes.  One autumn day I spotted this scene, which included white horses with a red barn and a background of trees enflamed by Jack Frost. It inspired first a watercolor (White Horses) and later this larger oil painting. The early fall, especially October, is the best time to visit, when the color is extraordinary as the sugar maples, elms, and oaks prepare for winter.” – mh

  • Lupine Field 18x24

    Lupine Field 18×24

    Unframed size: 18″ x 24″; framed size 24″ x 30″

“In the spring, I go looking for wildflowers to paint. The blues and lavenders of the lupine always catch my eye. ”Lupine Field “ is a larger studio painting inspired by my earlier plein air painting “Lupine Find” (a 12×16 painting.) The lupine followed a path through a meadow framed by oak trees. A bit of fog shrouded the hilltops as the sun was breaking through.” – mh

  • Meadow Oak 11x14

    Meadow Oak 11×14

Unframed size 11×14, framed size 17×20

The large old oak trees and gold meadows of the central coast area draw me to their warmth and color. When the fog is in at the coast, I enjoy a journey inland to find the sun. The day I painted here, large hawks were cruising the air currents above. I used the bright orange-green to emphasis the warmth of the sun on the oak. – mh

  • Vineyard Shadows 18x24

    Vineyard Shadows 18×24

    Unframed size: 18″ x 24″; framed size 24″ x 30″

“I am always intrigued by a scene that provides contrast in light and shadow. Above this California vineyard grow a row of oak trees with their large trunks and overhanging branches. The trees cast interesting pattern with their shadows on the warm ground plane. The sun was shining brightly on the distant vines, which were turning gold in autumn season. I painted the shadows a lavender/gray to complement the vineyard colors.” – mh
