Flowering plants are such a diverse and usually lovely part of the Plant Kingdom on earth. In seeking out landscapes to paint these flowers can be either an enhancement to a large landscape, or a primary focus of a painting.

    French Poppies, 12x16, oil

    French Poppies 12×16 … sold

    Unframed size: 12″ x 16″; framed size 16″ x 20″

This painting is of a scene I encountered on a recent painting expedition to the south of France with a group of other painters. It was the first of two paintings. The village on the hill is Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, a village in the Luberon Valley. During late spring, the Flanders Field poppies splash the meadows with their bright red color. I wish I were packing for another painting vacation in France. – mh

“I made this plein air painting while standing in a meadow one day in the middle of the spring. In springtime, the wild mustard and oxalis are in full bloom, creating bright swaths of yellow in the meadows and fields of the coastal areas of California. The bright color contrasts well with the tall Eucalyptus trees. In this location you can see a peek of the ocean through the trees. ” – mh

“I was invited to paint on site during an Art Appreciation Day at Point Lobos State Nature Reserve. I made a 12×16 painting of the tidal pools off the South Shore Trail, near China Cove. Back in my studio later I made a larger image of the painting and emphasized the breaking wave and the distant fog bank which mirrored the shape of the wave.” – mh

Early this spring, while at an outdoor garden store, I spotted an oriental poppy that matched the color of one I painted 20 years ago after a trip to Monet’s garden in Giverny, France. I bought this poppy plant, established it in my garden behind my art studio, and the plant grew large and took over one end of a garden bed. Finally, the large buds appeared and I waited in anticipation to see the blooms. Once they came, they did not disappoint.” -mh

“I am always intrigued by a scene that provides contrast in light and shadow. Above this California vineyard grow a row of oak trees with their large trunks and overhanging branches. The trees cast interesting pattern with their shadows on the warm ground plane. The sun was shining brightly on the distant vines, which were turning gold in autumn season. I painted the shadows a lavender/gray to complement the vineyard colors.” – mh
