This painting was made on location in a vineyard in Woodside, CA. I visited several times, then awaited a call from the vineyard owner for the time in the autumn when the leaves of the vines had turned a luscious red. It was the day before the Pinot Noir grapes were to be harvested. The grapes hung in large clusters under the gracefully manicured vines. It was an exciting experience to behold. The large nets, which protect the grapes from the birds, were being pulled off as I chose my location at the top of a rise. Once the nets were off, I had a clear view of the mountains beyond. The steep decline of the vines also portrays the hilltop lay of the land. I positioned myself down within the lines of a vineyard as they crested a hill, with the Santa Cruz Mountains as a backdrop.
I was most pleased with how the shadows and vineyard lines work together. The owner was also pleased, and she commissioned a similar but larger painting from me which now hangs in her home.” – mh
