Summer Workshop: Color and Texture

Dates:                 Fri, Sat and Sun, August 12, 13 and 14.

The morning and afternoon session of each of the 3 days will include lecture/demonstration, and then participants will GET PAINTING!

COLOR topics to be discussed include the relationships of colors on a color wheel, the major qualities of color, how to achieve color harmony, how to “break” a color, color as an important element in composition, what happens to color as the landscape recedes, what happens to color under different lighting conditions, and how to mix colors that appear natural to the landscape.

TEXTURE will be explored through demonstration and practice with a variety of techniques, including thin and thick paint, palette knife application, spatter techniques with screens and toothbrushes, stencils, printing and more.

This 3 day workshop is intended to expand your knowledge base for creating a strong painting. The workshop participants will meet, learn and paint together. This workshop format allows participants to engage fully for several days on developing painting skills. We will meet in my Soquel Art Studio, in a 625 square foot room with high ceilings, large north facing windows, and an industrial exhaust fan.

The class will begin each of the 3 days at 9am and conclude around 3:30pm, with a break for lunch.

All skill levels are welcome although some experience with painting in any medium is helpful. Class size will be small, so individual attention from me will be available, and artist students of varying experience can paint side by side. A materials list will be sent to you when you register.

All participants will have free access to the “Scholar Pages” on my website during the workshop and for at least 6 months after the workshop. These pages are where class notes, demonstration photos, and references may be found. These pages will contain the notes for each of the 6 sessions which comprise the 3 day workshop.

Covid protocols will be followed, for the comfort and safety of all participants. Self testing prior to the workshop may be requested to reassure all participants, depending on conditions at the time of the workshop

Don’t forget to pack a lunch; we’ll take a break each mid day. Bring a bag lunch or visit any of the several nearby Soquel Village restaurants. If you are traveling into the area, you will find Santa Cruz County to be an admirable vacation resort, with many beaches, parks, restaurants, and nightspots, including the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
